Drawing law / legal design

For the Big Kids: drawings to support legal study/work - or anything!

IV - HRC View and Reply process - draft
IV - HRC Compliance - draft 28 March 202

As a commercial litigator, I took each new case as an opportunity to get out a blank sheet of paper and pencil, and start drawing the facts in a way that made the most sense to me.

Being able to draw the cases also tested my understanding of them, as I was challenged to ensure all the key characters and activities were recorded accurately.  Some of the drawings inevitably grew into multiple pages of A3 sheets stuck together inelegantly with sellotape.  However, those drawings often proved to be the simplest way to explain things, and were even included in our formal instructions to barristers - and were even used in the Royal Courts of Justice for the judge's benefit!

I really enjoy the process of translating words/concepts into a graphic representation - whether of unintelligible legal jargon or a complex business model.

More recently, I stumbled across the term 'legal design' and felt like my eyes had finally been opened to the type of lawyer I always wanted to be!  I am now working on various legal design projects both in my work and on a pro bono basis, as well as through my completion of Lawyers Design School (www.lawyersdesignschool.com) and enrollment in Dot Consultancy's Legal Design School (www.legaldesignschool.com).
